Systems thinking is the ability to understand complex systems and how their components interact with one another to achieve a desired outcome. This capability includes being able to identify and analyze patterns and trends, recognize interdependencies and feedback loops, and develop solutions that optimize the entire system, rather than just individual components. It also involves being able to communicate complex ideas and concepts to others in a clear and concise manner.

Beginner competence definition

At the beginner level, individuals understand the basic principles of systems thinking and the company’s policies and programs related to promoting systems thinking. They are also able to participate in systems thinking exercises and activities, follow established protocols and procedures related to systems thinking, and communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders.

Intermediate competence definition

Intermediate-level individuals have a deeper understanding of systems thinking and the ability to work closely with cross-functional teams to analyze and optimize complex systems. They are also able to identify and analyze patterns and trends, recognize interdependencies and feedback loops, and develop solutions that optimize the entire system. They are also able to train and coach others on systems thinking strategies and policies.

Advanced competence definition

Advanced-level individuals have a comprehensive understanding of systems thinking and its application in complex, global organizations. They are able to design and implement systems thinking programs that align with the company’s overall business goals and values, identify and analyze complex systems and interdependencies, and develop and implement solutions that optimize the entire system. They are also also use advanced techniques such as data analytics, modeling, and simulation to inform business decisions and strategies, and use those insights to continuously refine and improve the organization’s systems thinking. Advanced-level professionals should also have strong leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate cross-functional teams to achieve systems thinking goals and drive continuous improvement throughout the organization.
